Board games vs electronic games

The argument here is that mobile educational games can transmit just as much knowledge as traditional board games. Kids find them more engaging and interactive.

But, traditional board games are about more than learning. They are about doing something together, engaged with another person.

What do you think?

  1. As a child, I wad definitely able to tell the difference between mobile and board games when it came to deciding who was involved in the play. With board games, it is nearly impossible to play by oneself and have full engagement in the activity. Instead, many families use board games as a way to entertain while also interacting with their children.

On the other hand, mobile games don't really lend themselves to multiple players and encourage individuals to be only focused on the game itself. As a child, I remember playing electronic games such as gameboy when I was unable to set up a board game. For example, the times when I was most likely to choose gameboys over board games was during long car rides or airplane rides.

I think that board games are a very important part in building relationships among family members and friends because even though the individuals may be competing against each other, they are learning about each other's strengths and weaknesses and building off of these skills to better one's self.

  2. I found this article very interesting especially because it found that "mobile educational games using augmented reality (AR) are just as effective as traditional educational board games in increasing children’s knowledge." Personally, I believe that traditional board games are better tools to successful learning for children because it adds an important element that electronic games do not have: face-to-face interactions. When I was young, I enjoyed playing traditional board games more than electronic games because I was able to interact with other people. Even though I believe that electronic games are very beneficial because they can be more engaging and interactive, I think that traditional board games are still the ideal way of learning.

  3. As a child I only really played board games and not mobile educational games. Every year for Christmas we received a new "family" board game. Even now at 22 and my brother 19 my family still uses board games as a way to spend time together. Even though mobile educational games were found to be just as effective in increasing knowledge I agree with Kaleigh that they are lacking face-to-face interaction. I think that board games are not just about learning but they are a fun way to spend time with friends and family. They are a great alternative to watching television. Even with the introduction of words with friends my parents used to play scrabble all the time but now they just play the online version because it is much more convenient. Even though they are still sitting in the same room playing the game I don't think it encourages as much social interaction as it does playing scrabble on an actual board game. I believe that parents should still play board games with their children, its a great way to bond with your family!

  4. This article is very interesting to me. As a child, I only played board games, and I thought they were very fun and liked to play them a lot. However, now that technology is improving and almost everything is done using some form of media, it comes to no surprise that board games have become apps on smart phones. However it is a far statement to say that "Mobile educational games using augmented reality (AR) are just as effective as traditional educational board games in increasing children’s knowledge." In my opinion, it is much more effective to learn without a mobile phone doing the work for you. Like learning to add and subtract without a calculator, I think that playing games without a smart phone is much better for learning needs.
